It's a MOTORCYCLE ALTERNATOR ROTOR and STARTER GEAR for a japanese 4-cylinder. It mounts on the left end of the crankshaft. The rotor has 10 or 12 magnets around the inside (check with a screwdriver tip). Most manufacturers changed from 10-magnet to 12-magnet stators in 1978-1979. There are three spring-loaded rollers on the back of the rotor. The starter gear has a small end that goes into the rotor, engaging the rollers. The starter turns the gear using the teeth around the outside. The rollers pinch between ramps inside the rotor and the starter gear, turning the crankshaft. After the engine starts, the gear stops turning, but the rotor turns with the crankshaft. This one looks like it's from a 1978 Suzuki GS750.
