It's a Ford/Fordson coil box (AKA buzz box, buzzer box , trembler box, magneto box, ignition box) for an automobile made between 1900 and up into the 30's. They had many different names but all served the same purpose: to supply electricity to power the ignition system that fires the spark plugs. They were usually set up with one coil per spark plug. Yours would have been for a four cylinder engine.
