It's a ALTERNATOR CONVERSION for a VW air-cooled, upright (not flat, or pancake) engine. It requires its own, larger stand, since it is bigger around than the original generator. The square black plastic plate with one wire terminal in the middle means it's INTERNALLY REGULATED. Ones that have three terminals on the plastic plate are EXTERNALLY REGULATED, and uses a regulator located under the back seat. Originally made by BOSCH, now most are imitators.
